Hexennacht (official date)
April 30, 2026
Hexennacht is related to several other ancient cultural observances, holidays, and festivals that take place annually on the night of April 30th and the 1st of May. This date marks the halfway point between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice. Also known as Walpurgisnacht (Walpurgis night, a Germanic Christian feast day for warding away witchcraft and evil), it is related to Beltane (Celtic, Pagan, Wicca) and May Day (broadly European) celebrations honoring the beginning of summer, fertility, often celebrated with flowers and bonfires.
Hexennacht is an occasion to honor those who fell victim to superstition and pseudoscience, whether by witch hunt, Satanic panic, persecution, execution, or other injustices.
In Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust: a Tragedy (1808), Mephisto and Faust attend the Walpurgisnacht revelry atop Mount Brocken. Our observation of Hexennacht is a solemn holiday to honor those who were victimized by superstition.
Satanic Colorado has taken this time in the past to host Hexennacht rituals.

Satanic Colorado Independence Day

Originally founded in 2016 as a “friends of The Satanic Temple” group, we became an official chapter (later called congregation) of The Satanic Temple on this date in 2017, which we consider our birthday.
Our congregation parted ways with The Satanic Temple on May 23, 2024. This is effectively our Independence Day.
